Nominations For Bravery Awards

Nominate a Brave Person for an Award or Notify Us of a Brave Incident

If your actions result in awards being conferred on brave individuals you will have done a great service to them and the people of New South Wales.

Eligibility

NSW residents, visitors, civilians, children, uniformed members of the Defence Forces or uniformed members or volunteers of the NSW State emergency services are all eligible for awards. NSW residents who carry out brave acts outside the state are also eligible.

To be considered for awards people must have risked their own lives to save others in dangerous situations. For example, a person who entered heavy surf to rescue a swimmer caught in a rip would be eligible but a bystander who did not enter the surf but administered first aid on the beach would not.

The danger to a rescuer and victim need not be obvious.  Rescuing someone in difficulties in a bay where a shark recently attacked a victim and may still be present is an example of ‘apprehended danger’.  Another example would be a rescue from a building fire where gas cylinders might explode at any moment.

It does not matter whether a rescue is successful or not, attempted rescues are equally meritorious.

The Awards Process

Once all the required information for a nomination has been received it is presented at a Council meeting for determination of an award. Each case is discussed at length and the representatives of the NSW emergency rescue services are consulted for their expert opinions.
